Straight-Side Phenolic Wheels (TH/TS Class) — Standard-Resin Fabric Wheels With a Narrow Face
Updated 2026-11
Straight-side phenolic wheels are the narrow-face, standard-resin members of the phenolic family. Phenolic itself is a thermoset composite: macerated canvas or denim fabric mixed with phenolic resin, formed in molds under heat and pressure into a hard wheel with no rubbery phase. The manufacturer selection chart publishes two straight-sided lines — TH at 1,000-1,500 lb over 4-6 in diameters and TS at 500-1,400 lb over 4-8 in — both carrying the standard phenolic temperature window of -65 to +250 °F.
What the straight-side profile trades is face width for a compact envelope: a narrower tread that fits tight fork and bracket geometry while keeping the phenolic virtues of high capacity per size, low rolling effort, floor protection and chemical tolerance. Where the duty needs a wider tread, bigger diameters or the full 400-8,000 lb spread, the general-purpose TM phenolic class covers it — this page is the narrow-face specialty, not the family ceiling. Our supply path is own production plus outsourcing; standard constructions ship in 15-20 days and custom configurations in 30-40 days.

TH and TS are separate manufacturer lines — each band stays its own row and is never merged into one family figure. The rating for your diameter, width and duty is stated on the quotation.
Applications & Selection
What the phenolic matrix delivers in a narrow face
Phenolic earns its place by what the resin-fabric matrix does not do: it does not flatten under static load, does not pick up oil and solvent attack the way elastomer treads do, and does not contribute rolling resistance the way a deflection-prone tread does. Published material comparisons describe the class exactly this way — a hard resin wheel with higher capacity, lower rolling effort, and better heat and solvent resistance than polyurethane, chosen for "maximum capacity, heat, oil, or solvents". Hardness sits at 145-150 on the R scale, which is why the wheel rolls easily but transmits shock.
The straight-side profile narrows that package. A narrow face means less steering scrub on cart corners and a wheel that fits compact brackets and tight fork spacing; the trade is higher floor pressure under the same load, which is why the chart grades floor protection Med/Low. Both published lines keep the standard phenolic window of -65 to +250 °F — deep-freeze-capable on the cold end and past the polyurethane ceiling on the hot end, but not the heat-resistant resin territory above it.
Selection points to settle before you RFQ
Confirm the floor first: published floor-protection rankings put phenolic in the middle — fair on concrete, hard enough to score epoxy and finished surfaces under point loads. If the route crosses finished floors, polyurethane or rubber is the comparison; if the duty is oil-soaked, hot or capacity-heavy on industrial concrete, phenolic wins it. Second-publisher sizing data gives the flavor of the per-size spread — in one 4 x 2 in stainless series, phenolic rated 900 lb against 660 lb for polyurethane — which is why per-line and per-size rows are never merged into a family promise.
Then the envelope: load per wheel with your safety divisor, diameter, face width, bore and bearing type. Between TH and TS the choice is mostly diameter-and-load shape — TH carries more in a smaller, 4-6 in wheel; TS spreads a lighter band over 4-8 in. Both are per-line manufacturer references, confirmed at quotation for your configuration. Standard constructions ship in 15-20 days, custom bores and bearings in 30-40 days, MOQ 200 pieces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight-side or standard (TM-class) phenolic — which do I need?
Both are the same standard-resin phenolic material with the same -65 to +250 °F window. The straight-side lines (TH/TS) are the narrow-face specialty: compact brackets, tight forks, less scrub. The TM class spreads much wider — 400-8,000 lb over 3-18 in with tread widths to 6 in. If your load fits the TH/TS bands (500-1,500 lb) and geometry is tight, straight-side is the fit; if you need more capacity or a wider tread, move up to the general-purpose class.
Can straight-side phenolic go in a freezer or near an oven?
The published temperature window is -65 to +250 °F, which covers freezer service and moderate oven-side duty. For sustained temperatures beyond that, the heat-resistant phenolic branch publishes -65 to +475 °F, and beyond polymer limits cast iron takes over. Match the line to the actual continuous temperature at the wheel, and remember the bearing and lubricant have their own limits.
What should my straight-side phenolic RFQ include?
Load per wheel with your safety divisor, diameter and face width, bore and bearing specification, floor surface, temperature at the wheel, chemical exposure (oil, solvents, washdown), and duty cycle. Ask for the per-configuration rating in writing — published line bands position the class; the quotation is the commitment.
Ordering & Documentation
Documents
Every order ships with a packing list and commercial invoice. Dimensional drawings (diameter, face width, bore, hub length) are available on request so bracket and fork clearances can be checked before production.
Quotation
A quotation needs: load per wheel, diameter and face width, bore and bearings, floor and temperature environment, chemical exposure, and quantity. The confirmed quotation states the rating for your configuration — the TH/TS bands above are published line references, not the commitment.
Sample & supply
Standard constructions are produced to order with an MOQ of 200 pieces; smaller trial quantities of catalog items can ship in some sizes — ask with your RFQ. Lead time is 15-20 days standard, 30-40 days for custom bores or bearings. The usual validation is a trial wheel on the worst floor section of the route, then a bore-fit and tread check before the batch order.
Storage & shipping
Phenolic wheels are thermoset and store without elastomer-style aging: dry cartons, off the shop floor, bearings greased and covered. Before installation, check the bore for transit chips and roll each wheel by hand — roughness from a bearing seat defect is flagged and replaced before it goes under load.
